Marking his first solo exhibition in Korea, Tetsuya Mishimaat Gallery ColonB pursues an aesthetic at the very absolute limit of what the human eye and hand can achieve in an era where technology has supplanted organic sight. Mishima’s canvas is far more than mere representation; it is a battleground of pure materiality. Entirely rejecting the convenience of photography, his practice of painting solely from live models and still lifes in his immediate presence approaches the level of a rigorous spiritual discipline, piercing straight to the essence of the subject. He delves deeply into the inherent textures of his motifs—glass, brass, silk, fruits, and flowers—and translates them onto the canvas with a distinctive, sensory tactile quality using classical oil paints and brushes he resurrects and crafts by hand.
